Almost Natural Tropical Fish Food - Ingredients
There are a couple major and very important factors to remember about the "Almost Natural Tropical Fish Food" before I actually get into the ingredients.
First, look at the ingredients on the label of the fish food you currently use. In many cases, the first several ingredients are "meals" and/or "fillers" of some type. That is NOT the case with "Almost Natural Tropical Fish Foods". Let me open your eyes a little as to what "meals" are. Most of the "meals" that other manufacturers use are processed fish, shrimp, etc., that are ground up, dried into a powder and then put into dry storage on warehouse shelves for anywhere from a couple months to over a year before tropical fish food manufacturers order it to be mixed in with their foods. A lot of preservatives are added to survive the possible long shelf life. During this process much of the natural highly unsaturated fatty acids and natural proteins have been compromised and in fact, mostly lost. Once it is ordered and mixed into the manufacturer's other ingredients, additional preservatives are added to insure it doesn't go bad in their warehouse while they wait for your local store to order it. Once in your local store, it sits on the shelf waiting for you to purchase it. Pretty interesting, isn't it??
One final note on this subject, the care taken by the fish catchers of the original fish, shrimp, etc., is minimal - after all, it is only going to be processed and used to create "meal" for animal grade food.
The food used in the "Almost Natural Tropical Fish Food" is 100% human consumption grade processed from the moment it is caught on the fishing boats. It is the same great food quality that you would expect to find in every good restaurant. Yes, this adds to the cost of "Almost Natural Tropical Fish Food" but the advantages and benefits far outweigh the cost.
Secondly, "Almost Natural Tropical Fish Food" does not contain lots of starches (another form of filler) as many other types of tropical fish foods do. Many tropical fish food makers must use starches to make the "meals" they add bind or stick together with the other ingredients they use. Many tropical fish foods you purchase have a very high content of starches - some as much as 50% - rice, flour, potatoes, etc., to hold all of the ingredients together.
Because the "Almost Natural Tropical Fish Foods" are processed immediately upon the arrival of the fresh human consumption grade food ingredients, it pretty much sticks together by itself. It's real food, just as if you were cooking fresh food at home rather then "meal" powders. Think about the following for a minute. Which do you think has far more natural proteins - a freshly caught fish you just cooked and put on a dinner plate OR a fish that has been processed and turned into powder, had preservatives added, stored in dry storage on a shelf for months, was reprocessed with many starches and other ingredients, had more preservatives added, sat around for a few more months in dry storage and then put onto your dinner plate. Doesn't the second scenario just described sound delicious and healthy??
OK - enough said about those two items.
As previously mentioned, "Almost Natural Tropical Fish Food" is made of a combination of numerous different fish (my seafood-1 category) and other sea life (my seafood-2 category) - all of which are fresh as they start into the process of becoming made into tropical fish food. They also contain a combination of fresh spirulina and fresh kelp - both of which are grown and sent fresh directly from a microfarm (my greens category). The other ingredients I add are vitamins, and as previously mentioned, these come to me directly from a Tropical Fish Nutritionalist (my vitamins category). This individual is a human being nutritionalist by trade and is also very much into the tropical fish hobby. He has applied his knowledge and skills toward tropical fish and developed a power packed vitamin additive specifically made for tropical fish. I started adding this product to my tropical fish food way back when I was making my frozen tropical fish food.
So the bottom line is that all of my foods are basically made from 4 ingredients - seafood-1, seafood-2, greens and vitamins. There are a couple of obvious exceptions, and I'm sure those will jump right out at you - for example, freeze dried blood worms and my newly announced "Breeders Delight Fish Foods" of earthworm flakes, beefheart flakes, etc.
I will list the main ingredient with each of my foods but will stop there. This is in part to the fact that I would rather not make it any easier for anyone to figure out the exact formulas. I will assure you, however, that after the main ingredient which I list for each food, the other ingredient categories (seafood-1, seafood-2, greens, and vitamins) will be listed in order of prevalence.
One more thing - based upon the particular food being made, the order of prevalence of the contents of the seafood-1 and seafood-2 categories is switched around.
Without giving you too many of the exact details and at the same time not keeping you totally in the dark, I will tell you that the seafood-1 category, in alphabetical order, includes but is not limited to black cod, cod, halibut, herring, salmon, plus several others.
I will also tell you that the seafood-2 category, in alphabetical order, includes but is not limited to clams, krill, octopus, rockfish, several types of various fish eggs, shrimp, squid, plus several others.
The vitamin additive that I add in, as formulated by the Tropical Fish Nutritionalist, includes but is not limited to Vitamins A, B-12, D, B-1, B-2, B-6, C, E, Niacinamide, Calcium, Biotin, Folic Acid, Iron, Iodine, Zinc, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Copper, Manganese, Potassium, Choline, Inositol, Rutin, PABA, Citrus Bioflavonoid Complex, Betaine HCL, Hesperidin Complex, Desiccated Liver, L-Lysine HCL and d-alpha Tocopheryl Succinate
Finally, do not be fooled by the crude protein numbers you see on fish foods you may purchase. Many individuals assume a higher number means a better food. Understand what the minimum crude protein number REALLY means AND what value you are really getting, or not getting, for the health of your fish. The proteins in "Almost Natural Tropical Fish Food" are all naturally whole proteins, and very good proteins at that, and come directly from the ingredients. However, in other fish foods that are on the market, anybody can add a bunch of wheat gluten, for instance, among other things, to increase crude protein levels very easily. Notice that you did NOT see wheat gluten, which is not even a whole protein, nor any other type of protein boosters in my tropical fish food. Be sure to compare the ingredients and not simply the crude protein numbers.
